1666 'De vergeten ramp'

In 2016 it was exactly 350 years since this disaster took place. while it had a great impact on the Dutch economy, it however was not spoken about and almost forgotten. However, the 'stichting 1666 - 2016 Terschelling' or in English, the 1666 - 2016 Terschelling foundation, set up a program throughout the whole year to educate about thit forgotten piece of history and remember those who have fallen during the horrific moments in august 1666.

The foundation was looking for a way to tell about these events in a modern way, that would appeal to the youth. We decided to make it a Virtual Reality Experience in which you are guided through all the events that took place in 1666.

The experience is based on facts about the disaster. Together with historian Drs. Anne Doedens, we made sure everything depicted in the app, from characters to ship types, is historicaly correct.

A storyteller guides you not only through the tale of the Dutchmen, we also take a look on the English side of events. We learn how the traitor Heemskerk helps the English to plan the attack. The tale of the brave 'Stryper Wyfke' is also told. As legend has it, she deviously convinced the English soldiers that there was a great army awaiting on the other side of a dune. The place she pointed towards was however a graveyard where no living man lay awaiting the English ambush. The trick worked and the English returned homewards, sparing the east end of the island.

The app is both viewable for smartphone powered Virtual Reality viewers as smartphone stand alone.
